Understanding Constitutional Conservatism in Idaho
Idaho is made up of 35 districts around the state. Each district has 2 State Representatives and 1 State Senator. The Representatives are part of "The House" and the Senators are part of the "Senate".
Boundaries are designated with population so ideally an equal amount of people will reside in each district. The districts are numbered starting with 1 at the top of the state then descend on the western side of the state and end in the east. Due to large population growth, there was a redistricting in early '22 to account for the change.
There will always only be 35 districts which means each legislator (an elected official in either the House or the Senate) will continue to take on more constituents. The boundaries of each district is determined by a committee that is appointed by the majority party in the state and then run through a series of revisions and legal challenges until it is finally agreed upon.
The districts are supposed to be non-partisan but in reality the majority party sets out to draw borders that most benefit its own party and keep the party in office. This term is known as "Gerrymandering". Idaho is no different. There are distinct areas that lean heavily one way or another, and next to those are districts called "Purple" districts.
In Idaho when new borders were drawn they are set out to help turn Purple districts Red and limit the amount of Blue growth. The demographics moving to Idaho favor this turn as 80%* of all people moving to Idaho are conservative. High growth areas such as the Treasure Valley (Boise), Eastern Idaho and North Idaho are seeing an influx of willing voters committed to help keep Idaho conservative.
The goal is for Idaho to have a Supermajority of legislators in both the House and the Senate to push conservative agendas in the state. Many districts will vote Red because they are comprised of a high quantity of Republican voters. This election is unique in that many historical incumbents were voted out in the Primary Elections and new candidates won based on various platforms.
A major platform that assisted many of the candidates is based on Constitutional Conservativism. The candidates that won in the primaries and have committed to voting according to their platforms and find themselves in a district with vulnerable opponents or districts are that are vacated.
Many hours were put into understanding an achievable path that keeps Idaho on the correct trajectory. To get to the supermajority and the Constitutional Conservative values, and without getting into every race, six districts were selected along with one statewide position. Other positions are important also and are listed in the recommendations.
The criteria used was as follows:
- Republican Candidate: It is extremely difficult in Idaho for an independent to win.
- Constitutional Conservative in platform: Staying to the state and federal constitution is critical.
- Has a real opportunity to win.
- Or is in a district that is vulnerable and can be turned: Purple to Red
- Or is in a district that needs to backfill a vacancy left when the incumbent lost in the primaries.
- Or is a strategic pick to apply pressure to the Democratic Party
- On a state level, it is critical to have someone who can check and balance any volatility at the Executive Level (Governor)
These are the main criteria but many others were used to determine the path for Idaho. As with any election, it is critical you do your own research and pick the best candidate for you. The list above has been curated as a path to help Idaho stay conservative.
